Along with Kudumbasree, Meat Products of India and Kerala State Poultry Development Corporation, Brahmagiri is also the nodal agency for the Kerala Chicken Project. The scheme is being formulated with the objective of making Kerala self-sufficient in chicken production. The Kerala Chicken Project is being implemented under the leadership of Brahmagiri Poultry Farmers Federation, Kerala Chicken Outlet Merchant Federation and Brahmagiri Poultry Mission. Farms can be started by paying Rs. 130 per chick at Brahmagiri Poultry Mission. At maturity, Brahmagiri Poultry Mission will procure chickens at a rate varying Rs 8 to Rs. 11 per kg. Under the division there are 108 poultry farms, 7 outlets, a hatchery in Palakkad and breeder farm in Pollachi, Tamil Nadu.

MoU on Poultry feed production signed with KVASU

In a bid to ensure quality poultry feed to the poultry farmers of the state, Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (KVASU) has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the  Brahmagiri Development Society (BDS) under the Dairy Department based at Wayanad, to bring out quality poultry feed for farms of the state.

Hailed by promoters as the first poultry feed initiative under the co-operative sector of the state, the tie-up came into effect on a war-foot basis as hundreds of poultry farms of the state was hit due to shortage of poultry feed which was a monopoly of companies based in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. BDS will focus at the production of the feed in tie-up with Nellukkaran Foods and Feeds based at Mangalore while scientists of  KVASU will ensure quality.

This apart recently BDS has purchased 24 acres of land in Attappadi, Palakkad for establishing a mega Vencob breeder farm in association with various government agencies including Kudumbasree.

Mission
The project aims at stabilizing the broiler poultry market and ensuring a farmer-friendly production environment in the state, developing the first co-operative model in the field of broiler production.

  • Make sure that the broiler meat produced safely is sold through scientifically designed outlets with waste collection facilities.
  • Improving the living standards of farmers in Wayanad and neighboring districts.

To provide self-employment to farmers and tribals are the other goals.
