Brahmagiri was born in Wayanad district, the land of many agrarian struggles. Acting on the call of the nation for more food production, migrant farmers had converted the jungles of Wayanad into agricultural land by fighting against hostile weather conditions and wildlife. But later Wayanad became the scene of many farmer suicides. There was a major agricultural slowdown in Wayanad. Farmers were left helpless as they could not find markets for their crops.
It was in this context the former Sulthan Bathery MLA. Sri. P.V. Varghese Vaidyar had founded the Brahmagiri social co-operative movement in 1999.
